Assistant Director of Nursing

PURPOSE/DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) provides leadership and supervision in the management of nursing practice and operations in the Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, staffing, quality improvement, staff education, medical records documentation, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements.

In the absence of the Director of Nursing, the Assistant Director of Nursing will be responsible for overall operations of nursing and patient services for the following departments: Emergency, Critical Access Hospital, Ambulance Service, Hospice, Outpatient Services, Cardiac Rehab, and Public health. In addition, general oversight of staff involved in Outpatient Services, Hospice, and Cardiac Rehab.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Supports and models behaviors consistent with Pioneer Medical Center’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental, and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

2. Coordinates the daily activities of CAH; promotes and maintains harmonious relationships between managed departments, other departments, and Medical Staff in order to maintain an optimum level of patient care.

3. Attends assigned meetings, committee meetings, and professional conferences. Assists the DON in leading and teaching nursing staff meetings.

4. Maintains records and reports pertinent to areas of responsibility.

5. Ensures quality delivery of hospital nursing and nursing support services.

6. Works with the Director of Nursing to facilitate orientation and trainings, and other education opportunities and annual competencies to ensure best practices are being utilized. Plans for and anticipate changes and subsequent adaptations.

7. Develops, maintains and implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

8. Collaborate with physicians, other clinicians, community agencies and organizations to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems. Works with DON to build and strengthen interfacility relationships.

9. Promotes customer service and responds to and adequately resolves complaints or concerns from patients or families about nursing or clinical care.

10. Coordinates and/or develops ongoing quality improvement activities along Quality RN for nursing services to monitor nursing compliance with standards and regulatory requirements through rounding, interview and documentation review. Demonstrates knowledge and application of CMS clinical quality and HCAHPS indicators.

11. Coordinates with other departments to standardize practices, processes and equipment.

12. Mentors and coaches’ staff and leaders throughout the organization.

13. Responsible for overseeing Interdisciplinary Department Teams (IDT) meetings for the CAH patients/team members and directing evidence-based practice plans of care. Initiates discharge planning from time of patient admission.

14. Develops proficient working knowledge of Cerner and assist in training staff assuring consistency, compliance, and evolution of documentation workflows within the EHR (Cerner) in collaboration with the DON and Quality RN, as needed.

15. Coordinates scheduling and staffing to ensure sufficient coverage. Works closely with the DON in projecting staffing needs. Assists with time off requests and posting schedules. Acts as a resource nurse in the CAH and assists with filling unexpected openings in the schedule.

16. Assists DON in employment decisions, including interviewing, hiring, promotion, performance management, disciplinary action, and termination, with recommendations that carry significant weight.

17. Performs chart audits and reviews for Quality purposes.

18. Works in collaboration with DON and Clinical Coordinator to cover 24/7 RN call coverage.

19. Assists with patient rounding and patient care as needed.

20. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental, and outside agency safety standards as it relates to the environment, employee and patient/resident safety.

21. Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development.

22. Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

· Common policies and procedures, both organizational and departmental

SKILL IN:

· Professional communication skills, both verbal and written

ABILITY TO:

· Incorporate population specific needs into all aspects of communication and patient care; scope of services provided will encompass age groups from infant through geriatric

· Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbal and written.

· Establish and maintain collaborative relationships.

COMPLEXITY & DIFFICULTY:

· Resourcefulness in dealing with emergency situations. Normal patient care environment in Critical Access Hospital.

· Practices within the scope of RN licensure.

· May be required to work varying shifts, weekends and/or holidays. May be required to float to areas of need.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor’s degree

· Current active and in good standing Montana RN license.

· BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC certification, or able to obtain within 1 year of hire.

· Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered

· Nursing management experience (preferred)
