Nurse Supervisor

Pioneer Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital, essentially the county hospital for Sweet Grass County, Montana: Population 3700. We are in a beautiful valley along the Yellowstone River, between three mountain ranges, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We serve our neighbors (ranchers, skilled trades people and active retirees) and the many tourists who come here on their way to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, or to fish the Yellowstone, hike, bike, hunt or just get away from overcrowded places. Big Timber is a vibrant and welcoming small town, an hour from Bozeman and Billings. Our schools are highly rated, with high community support.

Pioneer Medical Center has an immediate opening for a full-time Nurse Supervisor to join our hospital's nursing team.


Provides nursing leadership for the development and advancement of nursing within PMC and provides leadership to some clinical support services. Ensures that a consistent level of nursing care is provided throughout the continuum of care and is accountable for the compliance and cost effectiveness of nursing services provided. Responsible for staff scheduling, planning, and implementing the Compliance & Risk Management Program to meet the needs of the facility. Collaborates with Quality Improvement and Infection Prevention Staff and programs . Responsible for providing education and evaluation to all staff of Pioneer Medical Center, with primary focus on nursing; collaborates with medical practitioners to incorporate nursing processes.





1. Supports and models behaviors consistent with Pioneer Medical Center’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental, and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

2. Assists DON with the development, implementation and maintenance of the organizational/departmental policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to ensure safe, high-quality patient/resident care and in relation to care of trauma patients.

3. Participates in the development of and assists with the implementation of an education plan that addresses individual and departmental needs. Direct the orientation and training of new staff and ensure ongoing education in partnership with Human Resources. Utilizes evidence-based practice supported by nursing research.

4.Fosters an environment in which staff can realize personal growth and development through active participation in departmental decisions, shared governance, and opportunities for professional growth.

5. Assists DON to develop, retain, recruitment, and leads a talented team committed to accomplishing the goals and objectives of PMC. Recommends, implements, and evaluates plans and systems that assure a sufficient number of qualified and competent staff to provide care/services. Adjusts staffing plans as needed to ensure appropriate skill mix to meet patient acuity needs.

6. Evaluates nursing practice, assigned services, and environment in contributing to the development of standards that assure quality patient care.

a) Develops and maintains policies and procedures assuring compliance with state, federal, legal, regulatory, and/or accrediting requirements and standards.

7. Monitors appropriateness, timeliness, and accuracy of nursing and other assigned services documentation for all services provided to hospital, swing-bed and clinic patients.

a) Ensures all documentation meets all legal and regulatory requirements and supports maximum allowable reimbursement from government and/or third-party payers.

8. Demonstrates and encourages an ethic of open communication and teamwork throughout the organization. Provides consultation for related concerns and acts as a customer advocate by demonstrating sensitivity to ethical and legal ramifications of practice.

a) Serves as a resource to patients, staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Assists with problem resolution.

b) Serves as a spokesperson for critical access hospital (CAH), emergency department, and clinic issues, and represents PMC within the community and with professional nursing related organizations. Participates in community events as appropriate.

c) Directs and supervises nursing and assigned service employees when DON is unavailable. Adheres to administrative policies and procedures relating to human resource management.

9. Participates in the environment, health, and safety management programs, with appropriate goals, objectives, and measures. Directs development and implementation of organization plans for crisis response for both internal and external emergent events. May be required to be and is authorized to serve as Incident Commander during crisis management situations dependent on need.

a) Provides oversight to the maintenance of standards and regulatory requirements to maintain trauma designation.

10. Develops, implements, and maintains the facility compliance program. Monitors the performance of the Compliance Program and related activities on a continuing basis, taking appropriate steps to improve its effectiveness.

a) Develops initiates, maintains, and revises policies and procedures for the general operation of the Compliance Program and its related activities to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct. Manages day-to-day operation of the compliance program.

b) Collaborates with other departments to direct compliance issues to appropriate existing channels for investigation and resolution. Consults with CEO and legal as needed to resolve difficult legal compliance issues.

c) Responds to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and Standards of Conduct by evaluating or recommending the initiation of investigative procedures. Develops and oversees a system for uniform handling of such violations.

d) Acts as an independent review and evaluation body to ensure that compliance Issues/concerns within the organization are being appropriately evaluated, investigated, and resolved.

e) Monitors, and as necessary, coordinates compliance activities of other departments to remain abreast of the status of all compliance activities and to identify trends.

f) Identifies potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develops/implements corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provides general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.

g) Provides reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested, to keep the Compliance Committee of the Board and senior management informed of the operation and progress of compliance efforts.

h) Ensures proper reporting of violations or potential violations to duly authorized

enforcement agencies as appropriate and/or required

i) Establishes and provides direction and management of the compliance Hotline

j) Institutes and maintains an effective compliance communication program for the organization, including promoting (a) use of the Compliance Hotline; (b) heightened awareness of Standards of Conduct, and (c) understanding of new and existing compliance issues and related policies and procedures.

11. Maintains current knowledge of applicable federal and state privacy/compliance laws and accreditation standards.

a) Initiates, facilitates, and promotes activities to foster information privacy awareness within the organization and related entities.

b) Oversees and ensures the right of the organization’s patients to inspect, amend and restrict access to protected health information, when appropriate.

c) Establishes and maintains a mechanism to track access to protected health information, within the purview of the practice/organization and as required by law to allow qualified individuals to review or receive a report on such activity.

d) Works with the IT/Security Officer on any issues that arise related to access and breaches of the various IT systems

12. Provides education and evaluation to all staff of Pioneer Medical Center within a specialized area of nursing. Collaborates with medical practitioners to incorporate nursing processes.

c) Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula.

d) Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established care models; monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters.

e) Educates technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff.

f) Serve as a mentor to nurses, ambulance staff and identify growth opportunities and educational needs for practicing nurses

g) Promote critical thinking among staff, and show commitment to professional development and lifelong learning

h) Maintain current knowledge of trends in area of expertise

i) Implement and enforce annual staff training through LMS

j) Provide education at monthly nursing and EMS staff meetings.

13. Maintains nursing schedules for all shifts, working collaboratively with DON.

14. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental, and outside agency safety standards as it relates to the environment, employee, and patient/resident safety.

15. Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development.

16. Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

· Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, bachelor’s degree preferred

· Master’s degree in nursing, Hospital Administration or Business Administration desirable

· Four (4) years of clinical nursing experience, preferred

· Prior management experience preferred

· Exceptional interpersonal skills.

· Previous experience in a teaching setting preferred.

· Current Montana state license as a registered Nurse

· BLS Certification

· ACLS certified or ability to achieve within six (6) months of hire

· TNCC and PALS certification preferred or ability to achieve within six (6) months of hire

· Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered



· Participates in on-call rotations

· Responsible for daily operations 24/7 and 365 days per year
